Oracle’s Virtualization forum for oracle vm

I’m not sure if you are aware but Oracle have their own virtualization forum where technical queries about oracle vm can be asked.

It’s accessible at http://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=482

Examples include:

How to extend / add disk space to guest VM?
Install of VM Manager fails: ‘The database instance is not available’
OracleVM on Windows XP

and so on.

Article on how to install oracle vm manager

The below comments are part of an article that carries on from the previous post which was written by Tarry Singh with the focus now being on how to install oracle vm manager on the workstation skeleton.

“In our previous article, we looked at the open source revolution that Oracle started when it announced its hypervisor. In this article, we will install the Oracle VM Manager on our Workstation skeleton. Both installations are carried out on the latest 64-bit Oracle’s EL 5 servers”

Tarry’s full detailed article on installing oracle vm manager is available here at the Database Journal website.

Great detailed article on how to install oracle vm

I was just searching and saw this great article on how to install oracle vm from Tarry Singh at http://www.databasejournal.com/features/oracle/article.php/3712246

It gives a really detailed step by step run through the oracle vm installation with loads of pictures showing the screens you see at each stage of the install. Great!

000-664 may be hard to grasp if one does not have 000-730 to his credit. Same holds true for attempting 1Y0-258 before the basic 1Y0-256. However, for a 000-415 one does not need to be an einstein.

Oracle VM Template for Oracle Database 11g

Just found out that Oracle have released an oracle vm template for database 11g. Once you have accepeted the OTN license agreement you can download it from here.

To quote Oracle “Set-up a full Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Enterprise Linux environment within minutes using pre-installed, pre-configured Oracle VM templates”

The file name is oracle11g.tar.bz2

Oracle vm template read me

Thought this might be useful to show the oracle vm template readme in its entirety. This template is current as of 12/12/07 however I guess Oracle could change it so the link to the direct file is here – http://download.oracle.com/otn_software/virtualization/README

Oracle VM Template
==================
The following Oracle VM templates are available:

Template                   vcpu        RAM      Storage
--------------------------------------------------------------
OVM_EL4U5_X86_HVM_10GB      2          2GB       10GB
OVM_EL4U5_X86_64_HVM_10GB   2          2GB       10GB
OVM_EL4U5_X86_HVM_4GB       1          1GB        4GB
OVM_EL4U5_X86_64_HVM_4GB    1          1GB        4GB

The kernel is the same for all of the above templates being 2.6.9-55.0.12.100.1.ELsmp

Configuring the MAC Address of Template Instances
———————————————————————————-
When the template is booted up for the first time, the network MAC address must be configured.  It can be configured using the following steps.

1. Start boot up the template and log in as root.
2. Identify the NIC’s MAC address by running “ifconfig eth0″. The address is the field marked “HWaddr” and begins with “00:16:3E”.
3. Open up /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with a text editor and add the line

   HWADDR=00:16:3E:xx:xx:xx

   where “00:16:3E:xx:xx:xx” is the MAC address identified in step 2.

4. Modify the template configuration file with a text editor.  By default, the configuration file is called “vm.cfg” and resides in the VM server  along with other template files.

   Change the line:

   vif = [ 'type=netfront', ]

   to the following:

   vif = [ 'type=netfront, mac=00:16:3E:xx:xx:xx', ]

   where “00:16:3E:xx:xx:xx” is the MAC address identified in step 2.

5. MAC address is now configured.

Default Passwords

Root password for all Oracle VM templates: ovsroot

Oracle clarifies VMware support plans sort of

Interesting article that I found on the support policies for Oracle products and VMWare now that Oracle VM is out courtesy of Computerworld – http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.php?id=871537784&rid=-180

Three weeks after its openworld gathering, Oracle is taking one more stab at clarifying its support policies for customers running non-Oracle virtualization

Eric Lai 04/12/2007 08:30:09

Oracle is attempting to clarify its support plan for non-Oracle virtual servers to dispel confusion caused by conflicting statements from executives during its OpenWorld user conference in San Francisco last month.

After the Oracle VM virtual server was unveiled during the conference, CEO Larry Ellison said that the company would “essentially” continue providing support for Oracle software running on rival VMware’s virtual machines.

Ellison appeared to contradict earlier comments by Ed Screven, chief corporate development architect at Oracle, who said that the vendor would not offer support for such systems.

In an e-mailed response to Computerworld, Oracle contended that there is “no change” in its support policy for customers running Oracle applications on VMware. The statement asserted that such users have never been guaranteed full support.

“Oracle has not certified any Oracle software on VMware virtualized environments,” the company said. Oracle said it will fix problems in non-Oracle virtualized environments only if they are unrelated to the virtualization platform.

VMware contended last week that its customers running Oracle software needn’t worry about the database vendor’s support policy. “Oracle has been responsive [to] and supportive of customers who are running Oracle products in VMware environments,” said Parag Patel, vice president for alliances at VMware, in an e-mail to Computerworld last week.

“We haven’t seen many referrals from Oracle (even though Oracle’s official policy mentions sending referrals to VMware), which seems to indicate that Oracle is engaging with our mutual customers,” Patel wrote.

Gordon Haff, an analyst at Illuminata, noted that Oracle tends to work with its customers despite such support policies.

“Like Microsoft, Oracle doesn’t especially like to play in other children’s sandboxes, but in practice, it does what it has to for important customers — even if it does so reluctantly,” he said. “This isn’t exactly nice behavior. But it’s hard to argue that it’s hurt them to any significant degree.”

One cannot also really make out the intricacies explained in 000-078 or even 000-190 if one is not through the basics. It is advisable that 117-102 should be pursued before 117-201, in order to grasp a good background knowledge.

Oracle vm components diagram

I find this oracle vm diagram pretty clear in understanding exactly how oracle vm is made up of all the different components. What is good is that to me it clearly shows the relationship of the vm agent and hypervisor in relation to vm server.

What is the Oracle VM utility server

The oracle vm utility server is a component of the oracle vm agent.  It is an application that handles I/O intensive operations for virtual machines, server pools and servers, for example, copying, moving and renaming files.

There can be more than one Utility Server in a server pool. A physical server can perform as the Server Pool Master, Utility Server and Virtual Machine Server simultaneously.
